Get Connected

Plugin and get startedHornet is available in your study room when you arrive. Connect your computer to the socket in the wall to get started. Once you have read through all of the Hornet content and ensured your computer complies with the rules stated click on the Join Hornet link. You will then be prompted to enter your university computer user account details.

The University of Manchester

Users can join Hornet once they had completed the University’s central computing sign-up process. For University of Manchester Students or Staff account details can be obtained by visiting the following website:

Guests

Guests include students and staff of the following institutions and must have an email account (such as googlemail or hotmail):

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) | City College | Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) | Salford University | ManCat | Stockport College | Others including ELTC or other language course students

Some guests may not be registered as full time students at the University. The guest category also applies to some residents in private halls who may be keyworkers or members of the pastoral teams.

Join Hornet

Number 1 Make sure that your computer has
the right hardware.

Number 2 Before you connect make sure your computer is Secure.
It must have:

  • The Latest Operating System Updates
  • Up to Date Virus Protection
  • A Firewall Enabled
  • A System Password Set
  • Been configured for Safe Computing

Number 3 Make sure you have all the essential information
and understand the Terms and Conditions.

Number 4 Activate your account – this varies dependent on University or Private Halls. If your room or MAC address details are incorrect – please enter them manually

Unacceptable Usage

All Hornet users should note that the following are prohibited and carry penalties if you are found using these devices:

  • Computer Servers, Server Operating Systems or Services
  • Wireless Network Devices (Routers, Access Points)
  • Network Components (Switches, Hubs, Routers)
  • Filesharing of Copyrighted Material
  • Video streaming using P2P based systems
