In some communal areas in University of Manchester halls of residence there are University access points for wireless. These will always show up as “University” when your computer scans for local wifi. You can use these to connect to the Internet.
Wireless Networks and Halls of Residence
At present blanket University wireless coverage does not extend to the Halls. The operation of user Wireless networks in halls is prohibited and an explanation for this can be found here.
It is the strict policy of the University of Manchester that wireless networking infrastructure devices may not be deployed by students in their Halls of Residence, whether as standalone systems or connected to the campus network via a live Ethernet point.

“Residents in halls are prohibited from setting up or operating wireless networks or access points of their own. Residents found to be in breach of this part of the terms and conditions of Hornet will be disconnected”.
The penalty for the unauthorised deployment for wireless equipment begins at 56 days disconnection and a £100 reconnection fee, and in aggravated cases may result in the Halls taking disciplinary action against residents which may prevent them from returning to Halls in future.
