Get protected: Install free software and updates

Freely available packages provide quick fixes, but more comprehensive and long term security is something you often have to buy. There are some software links on this page including access to licensed software for University of Manchester Students.

Keep your IT equipment physically secure

Unattended laptops and other mobile devices, such as iPads and smart phones, are easy targets for thieves. Don’t leave them unattended, even for a minute. A locked room will deter the majority of opportunist thefts and a simple cable lock for your laptop will provided added security (see the Kensington web site for further information). Immediately report lost or stolen items like laptops, mobiles, USB keys and ID cards through the Security Office.
