What is a MAC address?

MAC stands for Media Access Control. A MAC address is used to uniquely identify an individual network device. Many devices have more than one network interface (often one wired and one wireless), and each of them has its unique MAC address. We use it in our system to identify students’ computers.

I have entered an incorrect MAC address. What do I do next?

If you have entered an incorrect MAC address you will need to log into the Residents' Device Registration system, select the registered device, select edit, then update the registered MAC address.

I cannot log on using my University username and password

You should already have your University of Manchester username and password. If your username and password do not work then your password can be reset on the IT Account Manager . if you are unable to reset your password or still cannot log on then please contact the IT Support Centre.

I can't connect to Wi-Fi

After registering your device and connecting via the device wifi password, if you cannot connect then please register an issue and a Hornet representative will assist you in getting connected.

If the UoM_halls network does not allow you to connect, you can always use eduroam as an alternative option.

All eduroam usernames start with your IT account name and finish with @manchester.ac.uk

When setting up eduroam, you must enter the username in the format itaccount@manchester.ac.uk , where "itaccount" is your IT account name.

For example, if your IT account name is v12345ab, your eduroam username is v12345ab@manchester.ac.uk

My phone / tablet will not connect to the wireless network

Please ensure that you have disabled randomised MAC address / turned of private MAC address.

Can I connect my smart device to the University network?

Yes, to connect your smart device, log into the Residents' Device Registration system, select Register then add your device details (including MAC address). Your device will then be given a Wifi password which you can enter after connecting the device to UoM_Halls.

Can I connect my games console to the University network?

Yes, to connect your smart device, log into the Residents' Device Registration system, select Register then add your device details (including MAC address). Your device will then be given a Wifi password which you can enter after connecting the device to UoM_Halls.

I cant share content to my apple TV

To share content to your apple TV you should ensure that the software on both devices is up to date and Bluetooth is turned off.

My Samsung Galaxy device wont connect to the wireless network

You will need to turn of wifi sync on devices that are setup with a single account and enter the separate wifi password for each device.

Can I communicate between my registered devices?

Yes you can share content between devices. The services that are currently permitted on the network are [TO BE CONFIRMED]

Can I just use eduroam instead of UoM_Halls?

Yes you can use eduroam as this service is available throughout the University however, you will not be able to communicate between devices (for example, using your phone to connect to Google Home, or printing to your Wi-Fi printer from your computer) unless you are connected to UoM_Halls.
